ASME and JSME hold joint workshop on nuclear codes and standards

NAGOYA, Japan — A delegation of ASME representatives participated in a Joint Workshop on Nuclear Codes and Standards here following the 15th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE 15) here in late April.

The workshop, which was co-hosted by ASME and the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), featured detailed presentations and panel discussions covering such subjects as the current status and future direction of JSME and ASME nuclear codes and standards, and the research and development needs, activities, and plans for codes and standards applicable to existing and advanced light-water reactors.

The workshop also addressed the new reactor development programs in Japan and the United States, and their implications for codes and standards, as well as emerging regulatory issues in Japan and the United States.

The ASME delegation included Kenneth Balkey, P.E., vice president, ASME Nuclear Codes and Standards; Bryan Erler, P.E., vice chair, Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards (BNCS); Kevin Ennis, director, ASME Nuclear Codes and Standards, Rick Swayne, chair, BNCS Globalization Task Group; John Koehr, president, ASME Standards Technology LLC; Ralph Hill, chair, BNCS Nuclear Risk Management Task Group; and Christian Sanna, Nuclear Codes and Standards staff.

The workshop also featured speakers from various U.S. and Japan stakeholders, such as Tokyo Electric Co., Japan Nuclear Technology Institute, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Westinghouse Electric Co., and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The event was co-sponsored by The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan and The Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association.
