ASME offers five Web seminars on lean manufacturing in June and July

D
uring the next two months, ASME is offering you the opportunity to learn about such lean manufacturing principles as Kaizen, the Five S's and the Seven Wastes — from the comfort of your own home or office.

ASME's Continuing Education Institute will offer five Web seminars covering various aspects of lean manufacturing between June 7 and July 12. Each course will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time the day it is offered, and will be worth 1.5 professional development hours (PDH) upon completion.

The first of these courses, "Kaizen," will be held on June 7. The name of the seminar is derived from the Japanese term "Kaizen," which means improvement. The Kaizen philosophy is one in which there are small, continuous improvements involving everyone, including the manager and line staff.

This Web seminar will explore problem identification, information gathering and analysis, determining root causes, generating ideas to solve problems, using simulation tools, implementing agreed-upon solutions, and checking results.

"The Five S's - Sorting, Storing, Shining, Standardize and Sustain," on June 21, aims to help you work smarter by improving your work area and removing waste.

In this session, you will learn the business and personal benefits of implementing the Five S's, as well as how to implement each of the Five S's in the type of work you do.

The Web seminar "The Seven Wastes," on June 28, will take a look at waste, which is defined by this course as anything that adds cost to the product without adding value. This session will describe the seven forms of waste, how to identify waste in your workplace, and show you what actions to take to reduce waste.

"SMED - Single Minute Exchange of Die," on July 7, will teach you about this set of techniques that make it possible to make equipment setup and change-over operations in under 10 minutes. SMED was pioneered by Shigeo Shingo, who also developed JIT (Just in Time).

The seminar will discuss the Seven Rules of Improvement, as well as the Four Steps of SMED: eliminating useless operations, simplifying fittings and tightenings, working together, and minimizing adjustments and trials.

On July 12, "Kanban, Standardized Work and Jidoka" will examine these three systems for building quality into work.

This Web seminar will teach you the Three Elements of Standard Work - Takt Time, Work Sequence and Standard Inventory — as well as the key elements of Jidoka and Kanban processes.

Registration for the complete series is $599 for ASME members and $699 for nonmembers. Registration for individual Web seminars is $150 for members and $200 for nonmembers.
