Rep. Sherwood Boehlert honored with ASME
President's Award
The Honorable Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y.,
chairman of the House Science Committee, received the ASME President's
Award at a reception held in his honor following the Fourth Annual Engineering
R&D Symposium, held last month in Washington, D.C.
The award, presented by ASME President Richard E. (Gene) Feigel, was
presented to Boehlert in recognition of his leadership in advancing
the science, engineering, and technology enterprise and for his years
of dedicated service to the House Science Committee. Boehlert will be
retiring from office this fall.

Established in 1998, the ASME President's Award provides an opportunity
for the office of the president of ASME to provide special recognition
to industry or to prominent individuals who have demonstrated significant
contributions to the engineering profession.
Rep. Boehlert has served on the Science Committee since 1983, and was
elected chairman in 2001. The Committee has jurisdiction over all federal
nonmilitary science and technology research and development programs,
including NASA, the National Science Foundation, and R&D initiatives
within the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy,
and the Department of Commerce. He is also a senior member of the House
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, having served as chairman
of its Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment from 1995 to
2000.
Boehlert, who was elected to the House of Representatives in November
1982, joins a distinguished list of past President's Award recipients,
including Sheila E. Widnall, Daniel S. Golden, Dean Kamen, Shirley Ann
Jackson, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Westinghouse
Electric Co., among others.
