Heating Up for Future Growth

In nature, summertime signifies warmth and growth, and at ASME, things are heating up for our future growth. On July 1, the final phase of the Continuity and Change initiative will begin: implementation.

In this last month of the transition phase, the Board of Governors will be finalizing priorities and recommendations, which have resulted from a comprehensive review of ASME's needs and resources alongside the strategies and objectives developed over the past two years.

By aligning our programs and activities with our strategic objectives and budget constraints, we've consolidated some areas and created others. Now, as many volunteers and members will start to work through the details, we'll face an exciting and challenging year ahead. ASME may not look the same, but you'll recognize what fuels the new engine. The work before us, our career drive and the volunteer spirit will continue to draw engineers together for the exchange we rely on and the advancement of the profession.

Our achievements this year, such as the launching of Engineering Management Certification International and the Young Engineer Correspondent Network, and newly built collaborations, such as the Beijing Consortium for Standards and Conformity Assessment, ASME Innovative Technologies Institute LLC and Engineers Without Borders, are impressive.

As I conclude my year as president, I believe that the Continuity and Change process will result in a stronger organization, one that will be capable of being responsive and accountable to the directions we have agreed upon.

Launching our new organization during the year that ASME celebrates its 125th anniversary is both poignant and fitting. Gene Feigel, ASME's 2005-2006 president, is well prepared to launch the implementation phase.

Hopefully, you will be energized and excited by the new opportunities that these changes will afford us. There will be new ways for you to make a difference, as well as new ways to enhance your talent and expertise. And, as we enter this new phase, let me invite each of you to help us make a difference.

— Harry Armen
ASME President
