As many of you are already aware, the ASME Auxiliary makes loans to mechanical engineering students throughout the year. The amount of each loan cannot exceed $3,000.

A loan from the Auxiliary cannot be obtained in the same academic year as the same student receives a scholarship from the ASME Auxiliary. Many of the students who receive loans and scholarships from the Auxiliary go on to distinguish themselves in the working and academic worlds after graduation.

In this vein, the Auxiliary congratulates Jessica R. Berens, who was chosen as one of the five finalists for EWeek in February. Berens was the recipient of a student loan from the Auxiliary in January 2001. She repaid the loan slightly ahead of time, which is always appreciated.

The ASME Auxiliary decided at its National Board meeting in June 2004 to adjust the interest rate charged on its loans to the amount charged by ASME International on an annual basis. Changes in the interest rate will take effect on July 1 of each year if there is a change from the previous year. Interest does not begin until three months after graduation.

Loans from the Auxiliary can be obtained by going to the Web site of the ASME Auxiliary under the umbrella of www.asme.org, or by contacting Janet Watson via e-mail at jswatson@bellatlantic.net.
