FIRST challenges inventiveness

Designing robots to collect and move as many stacks of boxes as possible to a team's home turf was the challenge for the 2003 FIRST Robotics Competition.

Crowd showed colors at FIRST in Houston.

During the four-month annual event, which begins with registration for regional competitions in January and concludes with a championship event in April, hundreds of ASME members supported the efforts of thousands of student teams.

Two team entries compete to stack the most boxes during the FIRST championship.

During the event this year, the ASME/FIRST Scholarship Committee awarded seven $5,000 scholarships with funding from the ASME Foundation.
