East meets West in 2003 HPV

With the West Coast Human Powered Vehicle Competition celebrating its 20th anniversary, and the East Coast/Midwest HPV Competition finishing its second year, interest in the annual ASME event was at an all-time high.

A three-wheeler with three riders, the University of Denver's entry in the West Coast HPV competition was the only one of its kind. The triumvirate team was fifth in total points.

The HPV challenge involves teams competing in several events while scoring points along the way.

West Coast's entry No. 1, from Montana Tech, earned the runner-up position overall with a total score of 90.

The Colorado State team, No. 69, scored the most total points in the West Coast challenge, which took place in April, The Montana Tech team's entry, No. 1, came in second in total points while California Poly, San Luis Obispo's total-point score earned the team third place.

First place in total-point scoring in the East Coast/Midwest competition went to the University of Missouri. The University of Buffalo earned enough points in various events, which were held in May, to take second place, while the Fairfield University team finished third.

The riders of Michigan Tech's entry in the West Coast HPV steered the team, No. 13, to 10th place in total points.
