ASME reviews DOE green-gas projects The United States Department of Energy is using the findings from ASME's review of 22 current research projects on carbon sequestration to direct government research on the capture and containment of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide. Read more.
IAB tackles engineering education Engineering education at universities should focus on teaching fundamentals that provide a foundation for ongoing training to expand engineering skills, according to ASME's Industry Advisory Board (IAB). Meeting here this spring, the IAB discussed a broad range of issues relating to the preparation of young engineers for careers in industry. Keynote speaker C.D. Mote, Jr., president of the University of Maryland, observed that although technology is pervasive in our lives, technical education is not flourishing. Mote attributed that, in part, to a relatively traditional approach to engineering education. Read more. |
Nuclear
terror threat discussed at ICONE 10 Approximately 500 people attended an ASME special session in April to hear about the possibilities of nuclear terrorism within the United States. Read more. Palm winner selected Ernest Lam of Black & Decker in Towson, Md., is the winner of a Palm Pilot after a drawing conducted by Mechanical Engineering magazine. ME conducted a mail survey asking members about their use of power transmission and motion control devices. Those responding were entered into the drawing.
