Regional Old Guard Competitions are completed and winners named

Each year at Regional Student Conferences, student members compete in the Old Guard Oral Presentation and Technical Poster Competitions, and the regional winners have been announced. Held throughout March and April, these competitions award cash prizes to the students who participate.

Regional Oral Presentation Competition winners receive a cash prize of $300 and have the opportunity to compete in the National Old Guard Competition at the upcoming Congress. Winners of the regional Technical Poster Competition are awarded $200.

For consideration in the Oral competition, entrants must choose a topic in a broad scope of engineering concerns. Presenters are advised to use all available resources and whatever visual aids are needed.

Winners of $300 in the Oral competition were: Region I, Jonathan A. Amory of Trinity College, with his presentation "SkimmerCat"; Region II, Francis X. Murphy of the U.S. Military Academy, with his presentation "Magic 2002: Autonomous Ground Vehicle"; Region III, David M. Chapin of Union College, with his presentation "Application of Marine Animal Locomotion to the Propulsion of Man-Made Vessels"; Region IV, John H. Slater of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, with "The Effects of Shear Stress on
Enthothermal Cells at Hypothermic Temperature."

In Region V, Daniel E. Basch from the University of Akron won for his presentation of "SAE Aero Design RC"; Region VI, Molly M. Mitten of the University of Wisconsin for her presentation "Accident at Three Mile Island"; Region VII, Corey A. Johnson of the University of North Dakota with "Power in the Wind"; Region VIII, Richard Witherspoon from the Oregon Institute of Technology, with "Convection in Zero G: A Space-age Oxymoron"; Region IX, David Crum of San Jose State University, with "Water-coded Microchannel Heat Sink for High Heat Flux Electronic Applications"; Region X, Marie K. Moran of the University of Tulsa, with "The E-Craft — An Amphibious Vehicle."

Region XI, Nicholas V. Snapp of the University of South Florida, with "Collapsible Scooter for the Disabled"; and Region XII, Chris Box of the University of New Mexico with "UNM FSAE 2002 Design Review."

Taking home the $200 first prize in the Technical Poster Competition were: Region I, Vladimir Muzichuk of Western New England College; Region II, Paula Washington of City College of the City University of New York; Region III, Jeremy Losaw of Union College; Region IV, Jonathan Kuniholm of North Carolina State University; Region V, Angela Snitgen of Grand Valley State University; Region VI, Raman Mahato of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; Region VII, Jon Hartman of the University of Minnesota, Mankato; Region VIII, Lindsey Womeldorf of Montana State University; Region IX, Claude Phillips of the University of Hawaii; Region X, Juan Lopez of LeTourneau University; Region XI, AnnMarie Uskert of the University of South Florida; and Region XII, Chad Wilcox of Colorado State University.

Cash prizes in the Oral competition were $150 for second place, $100 for third, $50 for fourth and $25 for fifth. Additional prizes in the poster competition were given at the discretion of the Council on Member Affairs or the Regional vice president.
