Former ASME President Jones dies

Charles E. Jones, who served as ASME president from 1980-81, died April 6 at the age of 81.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathyrn Glicksman and Claudia Jennings, and his sons Geoffrey and Jonathan.

Jones was an ASME representative to the United Engineering Trustees' Board from 1984 to 1994. He served as president of the UET from Jan. 1993 until Jan. 1994 and was a member of the ASME Foundation Board from 1993-95 and vice president of engineering education from 1966-68.

In 1972, Jones received the Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in mechanical engineering 20 years or more following graduation. He was elected a Fellow of ASME in 1975.

After receiving his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the City College of New York, Jones earned his master's from Texas A&M and his Ph.D. from Cornell.

Jones spent the majority of his career with Babcock and Wilcox. His positions included manager of the firm's thermodynamics laboratory, director of its Alliance Research Center and president of Bailey Meter Co., a subsidiary of Babcock and Wilcox.

ASME was represented at Jones's funeral, held on April 17 in Pittsburgh, by 1979-80 ASME President Donald N. Zwiep.
