Next month, ASME's 2001 Pressure Vessels and Piping (PVP) Conference will cover the latest developments in pressure vessels and piping technology research throughout the world.

The conference, which will take place July 22-26 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, will comprise roughly 150 technical sessions, five topical symposia, a student paper competition, plus non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and software demonstrations.

ASME's Pressure Vessels and Piping Division will sponsor PVP 2001, with participation from Section XI and the Society's NDE Engineering Division.

William A. Weiblen, ASME's president-elect, will kick off the event's opening ceremony and plenary session, slated for July 23 at 10:30 a.m. Welcoming addresses by Michael Thurmond, Georgia's labor commissioner, and by K.R. Rao, vice president of Region XI, will follow Weiblen's introduction.

Timothy Garnett, director of engineering for the Coca-Cola Co., and Jean Lou Chameau, dean of engineering at Georgia Tech, will both deliver plenary speeches during the session. Garnett will speak on the subject of "Under Pressure — Innovative Solutions for the World's Best Known, Trademarked Pressure Vessel." Chameau's topic will be "Engineering Education: The Liberating Opportunity."

The conference will also feature three tutorials. "Equipment Condition Monitoring," led by Judith A. Todd, will examine innovations in signal analysis technology that couple decision making with statistical modeling to detect changes that are still within the normal noise bands of the monitored signals.

A second tutorial, "Simplified Inelastic Analysis and Code Perspectives," will be given by T. L. Seshadri and Prasad Mangalaramanan. This session will cover topics that include the basics of plasticity, creep and fracture, modes of failure and stress classification, and elastic modulus adjustment methods.

Bob Ainsworth, David Lidbury, John Sharpies and Anthony Dow-ling will offer the third tutorial, "Revision 4 of R6 and Related Developments in European Flaw Assessment Methods." This class will examine the new revision of R6, which takes into account some recent developments in Europe.

Registration for ASME members and members of cooperating societies is $395. Registration for nonmembers is $501. One-day registration is also available. On-site full conference and one-day registrations will incur $50 and $20 surcharges, respectively.
