Winners identified in East and West Coast competitions of ASME's annual HPV Challenge

ASME's Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) finished last month as competition on both the East Coast and West Coast of the United States wrapped up.

HPVC is an annual event that showcases the design, aerodynamics, speed and agility of vehicles that operate purely on the pedal power of human beings.

The University of Denver team competes in the West Coast competition of the 2004 Human Powered Vehicle Challenge.

Student teams from Missouri, Florida and Alabama returned home from the East Coast competition, which took place May 7-9 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., with top honors in their respective categories.

The team representing the University of Missouri-Rolla came in first overall in the single-rider category, which was comprised of design, sprint and endurance events. Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., placed second in the single-rider category, while Clarkson University of Potsdam, N.Y., came in third.

The host university's team, the University of Florida, took the top spot among tandem (dual-rider) vehicles. The team from Virginia Tech was the runner-up in that category.

In the utility vehicle category, the University of Alabama came in first overall, with the University of Florida and Wright State University taking second and third places, respectively.
