Communities of Practice links those with similar interests in engineering

If you want to talk to your peers about technical matters, or if you want to chat about career and personal interests, who are you going to call? ASME's COP, of course.

That's COP, as in Communities of Practice, a new Web tool ASME is offering members to communicate with others who have similar engineering interests and concerns.

Several communities, on topics ranging from engineering entrepreneurs to power plant professions, were launched for volunteer-moderated beta testing in early May. After the beta testing is completed at the end of the month, the communities will be open to members who wish to participate or suggest new communities.

On the COP Web site, you can join a community, search for a community member, suggest a new community, participate in discussions and polls, and post your own message, or request to be notified when messages are posted on the community. Each ASME member will choose the communities in which they want to participate, and how they want to be involved.

The Communities of Practice pages will allow members to customize their own personal page to include communities and links, and to access an ASME event calendar.

First-timers will have to register upon accessing the page so they can set their home-page preferences. After a few minutes, first-timers will be able to participate, or just observe the discussions.

To visit the site, and test the features, go to www.cop.asme.org.
