In Memoriam: Paul Torda

Paul Torda, a Life Fellow, died on March 24 at his home in Washington at age 92 of lung cancer. Dr. Torda was a former member of the section executive committee, former section secretary and a recipient of the ASME Dedicated Service Award. He had a long, distinguished and multifaceted career as a naval architect, mechanical engineer and aeronautical engineer. His specialty was in the field of combustion.

More details about his career can be found in an article, with picture, on page B8 of the April 23 Washington Post.

I knew Paul from our interaction at executive committee meetings where he was noted for his congeniality, sharp mind and clear insights.

Dick Peppin, a former executive committee member, said that he knew Paul for almost 30 years while they were active in the technology and society division. He said that Paul was greatly interested in the interaction of social and technical issues. He was concerned with education of the young and was active with the Retired Scientists, Engineers and Technicians organization, which works with youngsters to get them in interested in technical careers.

Paul Torda was a gentleman of the old school and he will be missed.
