CANEUS conference examines micro- and nanotechnology for aerospace

T
he Canada-Europe-United States Organization for Aerospace Applications, or CANEUS, will hold its third biennial conference addressing aerospace applications for micro- and nanotechnology (MNT) from Aug. 27–Sept. 1 in Toulouse, France. The meeting is the world's foremost international forum devoted to MNT development for aerospace applications.

CANEUS, which was profiled in the article "MEMS Across the Valley of Death" in Mechanical Engineering magazine in April, aims to overcome the obstacles involved in transitioning mostly laboratory-proven micro- and nanotechnologies to systems by putting in place an end-to-end technology development pipeline.

In addition to the CANEUS organization, the conference is sponsored by ASME and France's Centre National de Recherche Technologique Aéronautique Espace. Other strategic partners for the event include Aerospace Valley France, the Center for Large Space Structures and Systems, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Hundreds of members of the global micro- and nanotechnology (MNT) community attended the first two CANEUS Conference and Workshop events, which were held in Montreal and Monterey, Calif. The 2006 CANEUS conference will build on the theme developed during the previous conferences — namely, the challenge of rapidly and efficiently transitioning aerospace MNT development from a mostly low technology-readiness-level (TRL) stage to system-level implementations. The meeting will explore the formation of an integrated "cradle-to-grave" approach for aerospace MNT development.

This year's conference and workshop will provide attendees the opportunity to interact with a number of important stakeholder communities, including the low TRL research and development community, the mid- and high-TRL system developer community, end-users from aerospace and defense sectors, venture capitalists and private investors, government investors in CANEUS member countries, and government policy makers for facilitating cross-border collaborations.

The conference format is arranged to provide each participant with the maximum possible exposure to exciting developments in the following areas: emerging MNT concepts, MNT system development, mature systems and sub-systems, end-user needs and perspectives, investment perspectives and roadmaps, and governmental policies affecting the coordinated, joint-international development of aerospace MNT.

Full conference registration is 895 Euros (currently $1,144 U.S.) for members of ASME and cooperating societies, and 995 Euros ($1,271 U.S.) for nonmembers. Full-time students may register for 600 Euros ($767 U.S.). Separate registration is also available for the conference, workshop and short courses.
