Zamrik selected as president-nominee at
SAM
Redefining and reinforcing the role of
engineering students, early career engineers, women and minorities within
ASME and actively promoting programs to better address their
needs are chief among the goals of ASME's newly elected president-nominee,
Sam Y. Zamrik.

Zamrik, who is a consultant and professor emeritus of engineering mechanics
at Pennsylvania State University, was selected as president-nominee
by ASME'S Nominating Committee. His nomination was announced last month
during the Society's Summer Annual Meeting.
Another major objective for Zamrik's presidency will be to ensure the
continued efficient implementation of the Society's Continuity and Change
initiative, a program that he helped launch.
As a BOG member, Zamrik, an ASME Fellow who joined the Society 32 years
ago, was active in the Continuity and Change reorganization. He was
chair of two critical Continuity and Change teams: the Reorganization
Review Team and the Project Management Review Team.
Zamrik also served as the vice president of the Society's Council on
Engineering, and had fiscal and organizational responsibility for four
technical divisions. In addition, he personally recruited a group from
Calgary, Canada, to form a new ASME technical division, the Pipeline
Systems Division.
Zamrik served on several ASME Boards with diverse functions, including
Codes and Standards, Professional Development and Publications. As chair
of the Pressure Vessels and Piping Division, he developed innovative
financial methods that have increased the division's custodial fund
five-fold over the last 10 years.
In honor of his contributions, the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology
Literature Award was renamed "The Sam Zamrik Literature Award"
last year. He was the recipient of the ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping
Medal in 1996, the ASME Central Pennsylvania Section's Outstanding Mechanical
Engineer of the Year award in 1992, and the Robert M. McGrattan Literature
Award in 1991.
Zamrik will be on the ballot that will reach the voting members of ASME
in the September issue of Mechanical Engineering magazine.
