PHILADELPHIA — As ASME Past President Harry Armen stepped down from his one-year term here at the Society's summer annual meeting last month, and Richard E. (Gene) Feigel became the 2005–2006 volunteer head of the organization, ASME's Nominating Committee announced that former Board of Governor member Terry E. Shoup was chosen ASME president-nominee, effectively becoming its 125th president when he takes office next June.

During a nervous moment at the end of an evening that featured an eloquent outgoing address by Armen and inaugural remarks by Feigel, Shoup was nominated to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Shoup, a professor of mechanical engineering at Santa Clara University in California, has been a member of ASME for 36 years, rising through the volunteer ranks after successfully holding numerous positions, including senior vice president of the Council on Education, and member of ASME's governance board from 2001 to 2004.

Shoup holds several mechanical engineering degrees, including a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.

In his statement to the Nominating Committee, Shoup used the acronym FRAME, to describe some if his goals for a possible presidency — where F stands for being financially savvy; R for the support of the current reorganization plan; A for the industry alliances ASME must form; M for the need to cultivate and grow membership; and E for the strategic excellence that must continue at ASME.
