ASME's 122nd president takes office
Reginald I. Vachon began his term as the 122nd president of ASME last month during the Society's Summer Annual Meeting. In a speech during the President's Dinner, he recounted ASME's many achievements over its soon-to-be 125-year history and outlined several goals for ensuring a future. Vachon is president of VNA Systems Inc., an Atlanta-based company that develops artificial intelligence and machine-vision devices for medical diagnostics. An active ASME member for 44 years, he holds the highest grade of Society membership, Honorary Member. Read more.
Security is key to start of Congress
Homeland Security is the newest of Raytheon Co.'s four business units. It came into being 12 months after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. Hugo Poza, vice president of the department, will participate in the keynote session at the 2003 Congress in November, whose focus will be homeland security. In this month's issue of ASME NEWS, he discussed the challenges of providing homeland security services. Read more.
A century of advancement in flight documented on new ASME Web site
Nearly 100 years have gone by since the Wright Flyer took off in Kitty Hawk, N.C., on its first successful flight. The links between that 12-second experience in the air and the advancements that led to the current explorations of space are being documented on a new ASME International Web site that was launched in May. The Web site offers access to articles, historical references and how-to sections related to flight, plus links to listings about television programs and teaching materials on flight. Read more.
ASME unveils Continuity and Change initiative at Summer Annual Meeting
During the summer meeting last month, several top-level leadership meetings were held to discuss ASME's strategies and performance, and whether the Society is adequately addressing its priorities. The meetings were an introduction to a new ASME initiative called "Continuity and Change." Read more.

Aeronautics workshop will examine the future of technology
ASME's Aerospace Division, with the Society of Automotive Engineers, recently organized the workshop "Aeronautics and Aviation Technologies." Read more.

Forum will explore nano business issues

The conference, "Integrated Nanosystems 2003: Design, Synthesis and Application," will take place Sept. 17-19 in Palo Alto, Calif. Read more.
