Using member recruitment to establish student scholarships was so successful during ASME's 2001-02 recruitment campaign that it will be used in the 2002-03 campaign, which begins this month.

The tally as of May for the 2001-02 campaign totaled more than $15,000 in new scholarship money. The final campaign tally, which includes June, wasn't available at press time.

Through the membership campaigns for 2001-02 and 2002-03, 50 percent of a new member's first-year dues will go into a scholarship fund for mechanical engineering students that will be managed by the ASME Foundation.

Dues from a new member who was not recruited by an ASME member will not be added to the scholarship fund.

From the time the 2001-02 campaign started last August, it has brought in more than $15,000, or about one new $1,500 scholarship a month. In May, the campaign raised $523.

A total of 349 new members have joined since the program began last summer. Of those, 23 enrolled in May. Overall, 315 members have taken part by sponsoring a new member.

These scholarships are awarded to ASME student members based on their scholastic abilities and their potential contributions to the mechanical engineering profession.
