In September, ASME will begin broadcasting a
series of nanotechnology Webcasts aimed at disseminating a fundamental
understanding of nano materials, manufacturing and applications.
The target audience for these Webcasts is engineers and scientists,
university faculty, graduate students and venture capitalists.
The 10-segment series, sponsored by ASME's Continuing Education
Institute and the Nano-technology Institute, will feature experts in
the field who will discuss a variety of nanotechnology-related subjects,
including the business and impact of nanotechnology, and advances in
computational modeling of nano-scale heat transfer.
A new 90-minute Webcast will air each month until June 2003. The series
will begin with Mihail Roco, chair of the National Science and Technology
Council's Subcommittee on Nanoscale Science, Engineering and
Technology. During the Webcast on Sept. 25, he will explain the "National
Technology Initiative and International Perspective."
"Research and Challenges in Nanomechanics" will be discussed
Oct. 16 by Ken Chong, P.E., director of the Mechanics and Materials
Program at the National Science Foundation.
The next Webcast, which airs Nov. 13, will explore the "Impact
of Nanotechnology." Avi Bar-Cohen, an ASME Fellow and editor
of the IEEE's Transactions on Components and Packaging Technologies,
is the featured expert.
The "Impact of Science and Engineering on Small Tech in the Next
50 Years" will be the subject of a Webcast in March 2003. Rod
Ruoff, a professor at Northwestern University who owns patents on fullerenes,
nanotubes and weakly bound clusters, will moderate.
The Webcasts can be viewed on individual computers or by attending one
of several public sites in Canada or the United States.
The charge for an individual broadcast is $75 for ASME members and $95
for nonmembers. Access to the entire series of 10 broadcasts will cost
$595 for ASME members and $695 for nonmembers.
