Young ASME members often need guidance as they build experience in the workplace after graduation.

The Career/Life Guide is an online resource center that is provided by ASME to help young engineers improve their current personal and professional situations, transition from school to work, provide advancement options, and help manage money and lifestyles. Although the information is geared to engineers just starting out, those of all ages will find the information useful.

The guide features four primary sections: Recent Graduates, Building a Career, Managing Life and Managing Money.

On the Recent Graduates page, users can find links to ASME resources as well as advice columns on various career subjects written by experienced ASME members.

At the Building a Career section, there is a link to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which outlines job descriptions, working conditions, training and educational requirements, earnings and job prospects. Tips on various work-related situations are also provided. There are also links to Professional Development pages as well as F.E. and P.E. exam preparation, licensing and ethics information.

In the Managing Life section, links can be found to graduate school and scholarship information, insurance (life, auto, home, etc.), and investment tips on buying a home or car.

On the Managing Money page there are tips on finance, debt, budgeting and investing, among others provided by Joseph Holm, ASME managing director, Finance.
Throughout the site, there are resume and job links, interviewing tips, suggested reading and an Online Career Discussion Group Q&A, where users can post questions ranging from education to real-life work experience.
