ASME develops new tools to help P.E. candidates ace licensing exam

If you've been meaning to get your Professional Engineer's license, October is the month to mark on your calendar. That's when the next P.E. exam will be offered.

Now, you have to ask yourself, will you be ready to take the P.E. exam in October?

If not, ASME International is offering several ways to help prepare mechanical engineers for this difficult exam.

The PE Online exam preparation is a self-study course that will be available Aug.1. This course reflects changes in the P.E. exam format.

The new day-long exam format now requires all test takers to answer 40 multiple-choice questions in the morning that deal with codes and standards. The afternoon involves 40 more multiple-choice questions, but on a specific topic of the test taker's choice: heating, ventilation and air conditioning; machine design; or thermal heating and fluids systems.

Those taking the PE Online self-study course can also e-mail the instructor for additional help. This self-study course can be accessed at http://peonline.asme.org/ starting Aug. 1.

The cost of the course for ASME members is $295; it's $395 for nonmembers.

The PE Online Live course will run on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (EST), beginning Aug. 14 and ending Oct.16. Instructors from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., will teach each module.

The topics to be covered include Stress Analysis and Structural Deformation; Machine Design; Power Cycles and Heat Transfer; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; Refrigeration; and Controls and System Modeling.

The cost of taking the live course is $625 for ASME members and $645 for nonmembers.

For more information about any of these P.E. exam preparation tools or to register, call Thomas Kuehl at (212) 591-8013 or e-mail him at kuehlt@asme.org; or call Kathy Warner at (212) 591-7411 or e-mail her at warnerk@asme.org.
