Engineering educators set to meet in Puerto Rico

Approximately 120 mechanical engineering department heads from across the world are expected to convene in March in Puerto Rico for the 2007 International Mechanical Engineering Education Conference.

The conference, a collaborative effort of ASME and the United Kingdom's Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), will be held at the Embassy Suites Dorado del Mar Beach & Golf Resort in Dorado, Puerto Rico, from March 23–27.

The annual meeting is the premier event for mechanical engineering department heads and faculty leaders to network, debate current issues, and examine strategies that will help them chart the future of their research and instructional programs.

This year, the Mechanical Engineering Education Conference will feature the following plenary sessions:

• "Research on Engineering Education," led by Sheri Sheppard, Stanford University;

• "Attracting, Retaining, and Advancing Broader Student Populations," led by Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Johns Hopkins University;

• "Cultivating Corporate Relationships," led by Nadine Aubry, Carnegie Mellon University;

• "Interdepartmental Collaboration," led by Adnan Akay, National Science Foundation; and

• "Teaching Creativity and Innovation," led by Spencer Magleby, Brigham Young University.

In addition to these presentations, workshops will be held on ABET preparation, departmental leadership, and graduate education.
