New internship to promote participation from young engineers

In keeping with one of the main focuses of ASME's Continuity and Change initiative — increasing the number of young engineers among the Society's membership — the Center for Leadership and Diversity's Committee on Internship Programs is introducing the Early Career Leadership Intern Program (ECLIPSE) to help encourage the participation of early career engineers at all levels of the Society.

The Center for Leadership and Diversity is now accepting applications from ASME members for the 2006-07 ECLIPSE internship program.

The new program's goals include placing early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within ASME, finding high-level ASME volunteers to mentor them, and providing these young engineers with ongoing leadership training.

The ECLIPSE internship program is open to ASME members who have served three to 10 years in the workforce and have not previously served as a Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) or Minority Leadership Program (MLP) intern.

ECLIPSE is a competitive internship program. Applications are due by Feb. 1, and interns will be selected by March 1. Participants will be matched with a specific ASME unit for a period of one year and will work closely with an assigned mentor to complete one or more projects throughout the year.

Internships will begin at the Summer Annual Meeting in June with an Early Career Leadership session. Interns also will attend the ASME Congress in November, as well as a training session at the Leadership Training Conference. At the end of the internship period, the Center for Leadership and Diversity will assist ECLIPSE interns in identifying opportunities for continued participation in ASME.

Interns will attend several out-of-town meetings of approximately three days' duration during the internship period. The cost of attending those meetings will be partially covered by ASME in accordance with Society Policy P-4.5. All expense reimbursements are subject to budget limitations. ASME encourages cost sharing of these expenses with the interns' employers.
