The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Selection Committee has chosen former ASME President L.S. "Skip" Fletcher as recipient of the AAAS International Scientific Cooperation Award. Fletcher was selected for his exemplary record of international collaboration involving almost every continent at virtually every level of activity, including education, research and policy formation. He has contributed substantially to both the understanding and development of science and engineering across national boundaries. Fletcher received his B.S. from Texas A&M University, an M.S. in engineering from Stanford and a Ph.D. from Arizona State University. Since 1998, he has been the Regents Professor in the Texas A&M University System. He is also the Dietz Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M. Fletcher has been in the international arena for about 45 years. He has served as chair or co-chair of many scientific and organizing committees for numerous international conferences, workshops and symposia. There have been significant improvements in conferences in which he has been involved. Fletcher has been active in ASME in a variety of different capacities during his 44 years as a member. His Society posts include stints as a committee member, student section advisor, government relations representative and Board of Governors member. Fletcher has also received the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award, the ASME Dedicated Service Award and the C.R. Richards Memorial Award. He was president of ASME from 1985-86.
