advisory council

The recently established National Advisory Council
for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NACBIB) includes one member
of ASME.
Frank C.P. Yin, who is an ASME Fellow, is one of 10 engineers and scientists
who accepted appointments to serve on the council. NACBIB meets for
the first time later this month.
The council is the advisory group to the National Institute of Biomedical
Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), which operates under the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), and provides recommendations on the conduct
and support of biomedical imaging and bioengineering research and research
training.
In 2000, when establishing a national advisory board was first debated,
ASME was one of the few organizations to publicly support the creation
of the NIBIB with position statements, white papers and testimony.
In the fall of 2001, ASME's Bioengineering Division recommended
six ASME members to serve on the council, including Yin.
An ASME member since 1986, Yin served as chairman of the Department
of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He
is also the Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer Professor of Biomedical
Engineering, director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering,
and a professor of medicine.
Yin received his master's degree in aeronautical engineering
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his doctorate in
bioengineering and M.D. from the University of California, San Diego.
The first meeting of the Advisory Council is scheduled for Jan. 16-17
at the NIH in Bethesda, Md.
A list of all the council members is available at http://www. nih.gov/news/pr/nov2002/
nibib-22.htm.
The NIBIB and several other NIH centers and institutes have grants to
award for basic and applied multidisciplinary research that addresses
important biological or medical research problems.
The purpose of the grants is also to support bioengineering research
partnerships. Partnerships must include appropriate bioengineering or
allied quantitative sciences in combination with biomedical and/or clinical
investigators.
The deadline for submitting an application is July 11. Applications
for grants of more than $500,000 annually must be submitted with the
support of an identified NIH staff member within one of the NIH institutes
or centers.
The number of awards and level of support will depend on the amount
of applications received and the availability of funds. More information
is available at: http:// grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-03-032.html.
