Society raises concern over OSHA's failure to use the latest revisions of ASME codes

ASME's Council on Codes and Standards (CCS) recently released a position statement expressing concern that references to ASME codes in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations are not current and may affect worker safety by failing to acknowledge advances in technology.

OSHA references ASME codes and standards in several of its regulations, but many of those references have become outdated and do not incorporate the latest revisions to the codes and standards.

Noting that the council has developed and implemented rigorous procedures of review and code revision for standards, the CCS has offered to work with OSHA to review and revise regulations, identify differences between the old and updated codes and standards, and evaluate the potential impact on safety and cost.

The position statement (No. 00-33) is available to review online at www.asme. org/gric/ps00.html.
