Nominating Committee seeks highly qualified Society officers

ASME's Nominating Committee is currently seeking nominations for a number of Society leadership positions, including ASME president, vice president, and Board of Governors members.

The committee is looking for candidates for the following ASME offices: ASME president (2007-2008), three members of the Board of Governors (2007- 2010), and five vice presidents (2007-2010) for the areas of Leadership & Diversity, Nuclear Codes & Standards, Pressure Technology Codes & Standards, the International Petroleum Technology Institute, and Global Communities.

The committee asks that every member of ASME help identify at least two candidates for each leadership position. Each candidate should inform the Nominating Committee of his or her intention to run for office by March 15, 2007, and submit a final nomination package by April 15, 2007. The committee will meet at the Summer Annual Meeting in June to evaluate the candidates and recommend nominees.

An individual may appear before the Nominating Committee as a supporter of a single proposed nominee for any one office (e.g., one proposed nominee for president, one proposed nominee for Board of Governors, one proposed nominee for each vice president). However, no one will be able to appear before the Nominating Committee more than three times as a supporter at any one selection meeting.

In addition, a member may endorse only a single proposed nominee for any one office, whether by writing a letter of recommendation or appearing as a supporter on behalf of the proposed nominee. In other words, an individual cannot write a letter of recommendation for one proposed nominee and appear as a supporter for another proposed nominee for the same office.

The Nominating Committee is composed of ASME members who represent the various Society units. It meets twice yearly, for an organizing and planning session in October and then again at the June Meeting to choose the nominees to be recommended to the membership.

The Nominating Committee first works to attract the most qualified and committed ASME members as candidates to serve the Society at the highest levels. From these candidates, the committee presents the best officer candidates to the Society's membership on a proxy that is distributed each fall.

Nominating packages are available on the ASME Web site at www.asme.org/Governance/Nominating/Nominating_
