Nano Bootcamp features hands-on training
this year
This year, the Fourth ASME Nano Training
Bootcamp will feature hands-on instruction at a nano fabrication and
characterization facility, as well as an optional tour of a particle
technology laboratory. In addition, the program will offer attendees
detailed and tutorial-based accounts of advances in the fundamentals
of nanoscience in a variety of fields.
The seminar, which was developed for engineers, scientists, government
leaders, attorneys, and R&D and marketing professionals, will offered
from July 10-14 at the Continuing Education Center at the University
of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

On July 11 and 12, attendees will have the opportunity to interact
with the university's technical staff at various locations throughout
the school's Characterization Facility and Nano Fabrication Center.
You'll have the chance to learn about the machines at the Characterization
Facility, which include scanning and transmission electron microscopes,
X-ray diffractometers, Auger electron spectrometers, and a wide variety
of proximal probe systems.
At the Nano Fabrication Center, Bootamp participants will become acquainted
with equipment for optical or e-beam lithography, evaporation, sputtering,
reaction ion etching, ion milling, focused ion beam processing, various
types of chemical vapor deposition, and rapid thermal annealing.

The Bootcamp's technical program, which will be presented by experts
from academia and industry, will challenge attendees with open-ended
questions about opportunities in engineering nanosystems.
Sessions scheduled for the Nano Bootcamp include "Micro and Nano
Fabrication" by Steve Campbell of the University of Minnesota,
"Mesoscopic and Nanometer Scale Physics" by Venkat Chandrasekhar
from Northwestern University, "Scanning Probe Microscopy"
by Ioannis Chasiotis of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
"Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy" by Vinayak Dravid from
Northwestern University, "Discussion on IP Issues on Nanotech"
by Richard Ekstrom from Buchanan Ingersoll, and "Electronic Devices"
by Mark Hersam of Northwestern.

Among the other Bootcamp sessions will be: "Introduction to Statistical
Mechanics" by Daniel Kosov of the University of Maryland, "Thermal
Properties of Materials" by Pam Norris from the University of Virginia,
"Soft and Imprint Lithography" by Dong Qin of the University
of Washington, and "Thermoelectric Devices" by Ali Shakouri
from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Rajeev Ram
|
In addition, Rajeev Ram of Massachusetts Institute of Technology will
present two sessions: "Electronic and Optical Properties of Materials"
and "Optical Devices," while Ryan Vallance of George Washington
University will speak on the subject "Nano Manufacturing and Metrology:
Precision Positioning Systems for Nanomanufacturing and Metrology."
A separate optional tour of the university's Particle Technology Lab
will be held on July 14, after the conclusion of the Nano Bootcamp.
