Nominations needed for nine Society officers

ASME's Nominating Committee will recommend nine of the Society's finest this year for leadership positions.

Five of those new leaders will be vice presidents. The offices are as follows: President (2007-2008), three members of the Board of Governors (2007-2010), and five Vice Presidents (2007-2010) for Financial Operations, Affinity Communities, Standardization and Testing, Public Awareness, and Professional Development, Practice and Ethics.

The committee asks that every member of ASME help identify at least two candidates for each leadership position. Each candidate should inform the Nominating Committee of his or her intention to run for office by March 15 and submit a final nomination package by April 15. The committee will meet at the Summer Annual Meeting (SAM) in June to evaluate the candidates and recommend nominees.

An individual may support only one candidate for any office (e.g., president, governor, and each vice president), whether by appearing before the committee or by providing a letter of support. Each individual is limited to a maximum of three appearances as a supporter. Nominating Committee members, alternates, advisors, and consultants cannot appear or provide letters of support for particular candidates.

The Nominating Committee is made up of ASME members who represent the various Society units. It meets twice yearly, for an organizing and planning session in October and then again at SAM to choose the nominees to be recommended to the membership.

The Nominating Committee first works to attract the most qualified and committed ASME members as candidates to serve the Society at the highest levels. From these candidates, the committee presents the best officer candidates to the Society's membership on a proxy that is distributed each fall.

Candidate packages are available on ASME's Web site at www.asme.org/nomcomm. For further information about procedures or for a candidate package, please contact Larry L. Luna, chair, 2006 Nominating Committee, at (505) 844-8027, lunal@asme.org; Diane C. Rutherford, secretary, 2006 Nominating Committee, (972) 294-1010, rutherforddi@asme.org, or Warren Leonard, ASME staff, (212) 591-7846, leonardw@asme.org.

ASME members also have the option of organizing a special nominating committee to propose additional nominees. If they wish to do so, at least one percent of the corporate members must notify ASME's executive director of this intention. If such a committee is formed, the names it proposes will also appear on the proxy. The names of any nominees selected by a special nominating committee must be submitted by Aug. 6 to the executive director's office.

For more information on this option, contact Warren Leonard, (212) 591-7846, leonardw@asme.org.
