Gender equity workshop will be one of
EWeek activities
Engineers Week organizers are working
with the Sally Ride Science Foundation to offer a gender equity workshop
for educators and adult volunteers who work with young students.
The free workshop will take place at the National Building Museum in
Washington, D.C., Saturday, Feb. 18, which is also Discover Engineering
Family Day at the museum.
The hour-long session, titled "As You Teach Science: Why Gender
Equity Matters and How You Can Create An Equitable Classroom,"
will be given at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Eastern time on Feb. 18 in
museum classroom 318.
The workshop is intended to be a valuable tool for volunteers from ASME
and other professional societies particularly those involved
in outreach or diversity issues. This workshop will provide educators
with a summary of current research on girls in science, research-based
strategies for encouraging girls' interests in science, and a forum
for reflective discussion.
A professional development certificate from the Sally Ride Science Foundation
will be awarded to those who attend.
Although the focus will be classroom educators, the workshop is open
to all adult mentors and volunteers, especially engineers who will be
visiting schools, scout leaders, after-school program leaders, etc.
Please e-mail eweek@nspe.org
to register for the workshop, listing your first and second time preference.
