The Third International Conference on Microchannels and Minichannels will offer a platform for researchers to exchange information and identify research needs in an emerging area that encompasses many engineering and biomedical disciplines.

The conference will take place June 13-15 at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto.

Because of their ability to transfer large heat fluxes, microchannels and minichannels are being used in many heat transfer applications, said Satish Kandlikar, the conference chair.

Other applications of microchannels and minichannels are in advanced heat exchangers, biological applications such as lung, heart, brain and kidney functions, and in electronic cooling.

More than 20 conference speakers have been confirmed thus far.

Teruo Fujii will address processing and analyzing biological samples in microchannels. He holds a Ph.D. degree in engineering from the University of Tokyo. Currently, he is an associate professor at the Underwater Technology Research Center in the Institute of Industrial Science.

Michael R. King will discuss "Microchannels as Models of Pathophysiological Blood Cell Adhesion." He currently holds secondary appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Biophysics & Structural Biology Cluster at Rochester. His research interests include biofluid mechanics and cell adhesion.

Arno W. Tilles, M.D., will speak about "Engineering a Bioartificial Liver Device." He is an instructor in surgery and bioengineering at Harvard Medical School. He has a B.S. degree in biology, a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. in biomedical engineering, all from the University of Miami. He also received an M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine.
