Join the thousands of technical professionals who are expected to gather in Vienna, Austria, during June for the ASME Turbo Expo 2004 — the premier international gas turbine event and educational forum for engineers and other specialists involved in designing, operating and maintaining gas turbines.

ASME Turbo Expo 2004, which combines a technical papers program, applied topics, keynote presentations, pre-conference workshops and an industry exposition, is sponsored by ASME's International Gas Turbine Institute. The meeting, which marks its 49th year in June, will take place at the Austria Center Vienna from June 14-17.

The event's industry exposition will feature dozens of companies representing land-based industrial engines, commercial and military aircraft engines, marine propulsion and power systems, oil and gas platforms, commercial power plant applications, pipeline applications, gas turbine manufacturing and packaging, auxiliary equipment production, engineering software, consulting and engineering services, gas turbine maintenance operations, package/turnkey applications, testing and related industry services.

Once again this year, the Turbo Expo's technical sessions will be the leading forum for gas turbine power and propulsion professionals, featuring more refereed technical papers on gas turbine technology than any other conference in the world. Among the areas that will be explored in the hundreds of papers to be presented are aircraft engines, ceramics, alternative fuels, environmental regulation, heat transfer, microturbines, marine applications, distributed generation, structures and dynamics, and turbomachinery.

The Turbo Expo's technical congress will also feature the technical track, "Applied Operations and Maintenance," a group of 10 sessions that will focus on current, primary issues for those involved in hands-on gas turbine operations and maintenance. These sessions will give conference-goers a chance to share lessons they've learned on the job as well as best business practices for greater efficiency and profitability.

The keynote session, on June 14, will feature August Wilhelm Henningsen, chairman of the executive board, Lufthansa Technik AG, Hans-O. Jeske, member of the executive board, MAN Turbomaschinen AG, and Klaus Steffens, president and chief executive officer, MTU Aero Engines GmbH. The three experts will address the conference's theme, "New Benchmarks for Operating Efficiency."

The next day, Turbo Expo will host its International Aerospace Dinner and Panel, providing an opportunity to hear from professionals involved in shaping policy for the future of aerospace industry in the United States and Europe. This panel will be comprised of members of two high-level aerospace commissions, the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry and the European Advisory Group. They will share findings from reports they've provided to their respective governing bodies, the U.S. White House and Congress and the European Commission.

Tickets are sold separately for this function. They are $100 per person, with a discounted ticket fee of $75 for paid registrants of the Turbo Expo technical congress.

And once you're at the Turbo Expo, don't forget to attend one of the facility tours that will be offered. IGTI will be holding five tours of several leading European gas turbine equipment manufacturers for conference registrants. The tours will visit the OMV Baumgarten plant, two Linz AG units, Donaustadt Unit 3, the Simmering Power Station Unit 3 and EVN's Theiss Power Station.

Registration for ASME Turbo Expo 2004 for members of ASME and participating societies is $720 before May 14, $840 after that date. Nonmember registration is $960 before May 14, $1,080 after that. Employees of exhibiting companies may register for $660 before May 14, $780 after then. ASME retired Life Member registration is $60 before May 14, $90 afterward. Nonmember students may register for $90 before May 14, $120 after that date. ASME student members may register free of charge. One-day registration is also available.

Three workshops will be offered on Sunday, June 13. The workshops, which will run concurrently, are titled "Combustion Dynamics," "Gas Turbine Repair and Metallurgy Techniques," and "Industrial Gas Turbine Operation and Performance." Registration for a workshop is $400 with full registration to the Turbo Expo. Workshop-only registration is $550 per course.
