The ASME Auxiliary gave out two Rice-Cullimore
Scholarships for non-U.S. graduate students this past fall. They went
to Bereket Nigusse, from Eritrea, for study toward a doctoral degree,
and Gabriel Preliasco of Uruguay for study toward a master's degree.
Janna C. Collins has replaced Dorothy Landwaard as a new reader on this
scholarship committee.
We have gained 25 new members in the six months since the new fiscal
year began for the Auxiliary. Unfortunately, however, we also lost 21
members during that same period. Anna Lou Fall has resigned as parliamentarian
and Donna Simoneau has been appointed to the position. I urge anyone
wishing to contribute toward the fund raising or other work of the Auxiliary
to contact either Lynn Gerber, Auxiliary treasurer, at Gordlynngerber@cs.com
or Nina Webb, Auxiliary president, at webbj@asme.org.
A motion to provide a total of $35,500 toward the two Clarke Scholarships
was approved at the November ASME Auxiliary Board meeting. Of that amount,
$18,000 will fund one-half of the Clarke scholarship money that goes
to the mechanical engineering departments of the winning colleges, and
$17,500 will finance one-half of the scholarship money going to high
school students who participate in the FIRST programs. Both of these
awards are done in conjunction with the ASME Foundation.
Please remember that the deadline for applications for our scholarships
is March 15. Applications can be obtained from the Web site of the ASME
Auxiliary, which can be accessed through ASME.ORG, www.asme.org.
Loan money is also available to people who have not been fortunate enough
to obtain a scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year. Contact Janet
Watson at jswatson@bellatlantic.net to receive applications and information
about our loans.
