Shaw is one of the largest global suppliers of fabricated piping systems, having installed piping systems in more than 375 power plants with an aggregate capacity in excess of 200,000 megawatts. Stone & Webster is a premier name in engineering, procurement and construction services for the global power generation and process industries, with a long history.

The company also engages in pipe fabrication and comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction services for the process industries and the environmental and infrastructure markets.

Paul Edwards is an ASME Pressure Vessel Code programs manager and vice president of Stone & Webster Construction Inc. He spoke with ASME NEWS about the company's investment of $150,000 in ASME's Capital Campaign. Since its launch in 1997, the campaign has raised nearly $6 million, almost double the initial goal.

ASME NEWS:
Why is this campaign important to you?

Edwards: With Shaw's acquisition of Stone & Webster, the size of the organization has more than doubled, to approximately 13,000 people.

We're a global provider of complete piping systems and comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction services, so Shaw/Stone & Webster understands that the work of the ASME Foundation represents an essential contribution to the needs of our industry and society as a whole.

ASME NEWS:
What element of ASME's campaign are you most interested in supporting?

Edwards: As a leader in the engineering, fabrication and construction industry, Shaw/Stone & Webster understands the importance of strengthening the technical competency and developing the skilled resources that will be required of our engineers as our industry grows.

ASME NEWS: What is your history with ASME?

Edwards: The Shaw/Stone & Webster organization has a long-standing commitment and involvement in the ASME Codes and Standards community. We know how much engineers look to ASME for help in areas such as technical literacy, career development and professional networking.

A strong ASME Foundation will advance the profession and practice of mechanical engineering. Shaw/Stone & Webster is pleased to join with an impressive resume of both corporate and individual sponsors in committing to the future of the Foundation and achievement of its goals.

ASME NEWS: How can the ASME Foundation prepare engineers for the 21st century?

Edwards: The challenges in preparing engineers for the 21st century will require innovative approaches to rapidly evolving technologies. Investment in management and professional skills will be critical in meeting these needs. Through funding for state-of-the-art technical and human resource programs, the ASME Foundation has established itself as a leader in equipping engineers with tools needed to deal with a changing market place. The "World Class ... By Design" capital campaign is an important opportunity to share in the response and benefits of these efforts.
