The Nominating Committee will meet in Minneapolis in June during the 2002 ASME Summer Annual Meeting (SAM) to select nominees for presentation to the corporate membership for election for terms starting at the 2003 SAM.

The Nominating Committee is made up of ASME members from various Society units and meets twice yearly; organizing and planning at the Congress and then choosing nominees to be recommended to the membership at SAM.

The committee's first priority is to attract qualified and committed ASME members as candidates to serve the Society at the officer level. From these candidates, the Nominating Committee recommends 17 of the best and presents them through a proxy distributed in the fall.

Of the 17 nominees, 13 will serve as vice presidents. The offices to be filled are president (2003-2004), three members of the Board of Governors (2003-2006) and 13 vice presidents (2003-2006) for Regions I, VII, IX, XI and XII, and for Conformity Assessment, Engineering Education, Engineering and Technology Management, Environment and Transportation, Government Relations, International Gas Turbine Institute, Member Interests and Development, and Safety Codes and Standards.

Please note that candidates must notify the Committee of their intention to run for office by March 15 and nominations must be submitted to the Nominating Committee by April 15.

The preliminary schedule for proposed nominees and their supporters to appear before the Nominating Committee at SAM is as follows: Monday, June 10: morning, regional vice presidents; afternoon, technical and other vice presidents. Tuesday, June 11: morning, technical and other vice presidents; afternoon, Board of Governors; Wednesday, June 12: morning, president.

The Nominating Committee requires careful scheduling of the proposed nominees and their supporters by the chair of the Interview Scheduling Subcommittee. An individual may support only one candidate for any office — for example, one candidate for president, one for BOG, one for each vice president. Supporters will appear before the Nominating Committee or provide a letter of support.

Each individual is limited to a maximum of three appearances as a supporter. Nominating Committee members, alternates, advisors and consultants cannot appear or provide letters of support for any candidates.

ASME members also have the option of organizing a special nominating committee to propose additional nominees. If they choose to do so, at least one percent of the corporate members must notify the Executive Director of this intention. If such a committee is formed, the names it proposes will also appear on the proxy. The names of any nominees selected by a special nominating committee must be submitted
by Aug. 6 to the Executive Director's office.
