Elevator, Code short courses to be offered in San Diego

Brush up on elevators and escalator inspection, ASME Codes and Standards, and a number of other engineering topics during a slate of ASME Professional Development short courses that will be offered in San Diego this April.

The classes, to be held from April 23-27, will take place at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley.

Among these courses will be the new offering, "Tolerance Stack-up," which will be given on April 26 and 27. This seminar will show you how to perform tolerance stack-up analysis to predict worst-case assembly variation based upon preselected or preferred component tolerances, and how to develop component tolerances that will support assembly design goals. Registration is $695 for ASME members, $795 for nonmembers.

The short course "Introduction to Elevators and Escalators" will be offered on April 23 and 24. The class will cover the essential elements of the design and operation of elevator and escalator systems. It will also address the terminology and functions of the various associated mechanical and electrical components. Registration is $795 for members, $895 for nonmembers.

"How to Perform Elevator Inspections Using ASME A17.2.1 and A17.2.2" will be held from April 25 to 27. Highlights of this course include a review of inspection requirements for each item on the checklist in the new "Inspector's Manual for Elevators" and a review of safety practices for inspection and maintenance that are highlighted in the manual and in the "Elevator Industry Field Employees' Safety Handbook." Registration is $950 for members, $1,050 for nonmembers.

"Code B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems," on April 23 and 24, will explain the present-day piping code provisions, the principal intentions of the code, and how the code should be used. Registration is $895 for members, $995 for nonmembers.

From April 25-26, "ASME B31.4 for the Pipeline Operator" will provide the foundation for properly applying the code in the interest of public and employee safety. You'll learn what factors cause pipelines to fail and what to concentrate on in design, construction, operations and maintenance to prevent failures. Registration is $895 for members, $995 for nonmembers.

The short course "Seismic Design and Retrofit of Equipment and Piping," from April 23-26, will help you understand in detail the requirements for the seismic design or retrofit of critical plant and facility systems and equipment, and evaluate plant piping and equipment to ensure that those requirements are met. Registration is $1,395 for members, $1,495 for nonmembers,

"ASME Y14.5M: Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, Level I" will be offered from April 23-25. The class will provide thorough coverage of the ASME Y14.5 Code, using lectures, discussions and problem solving sessions. The course also will cover key topics, such as maximum material condition, true position and datums. Registration is $1,070 for members, $1,170 for nonmembers.
