Codes and Standards workshops lead to the formation of a marketing task force

Formulating a business plan for developing and marketing ASME products in China is the focus of a new ASME task force.

The task force, which had its second teleconference last month, was created in November after a series of Codes and Standards workshops took place in Bejing. The task force, which is part of the Codes and Standards Board on International Standards, had its first teleconference in December.

The workshop on ASME standards for nuclear energy was well attended.

The workshops — one each on the Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, standards for nuclear energy and standards for elevators — were part of an ongoing effort to enable companies to do business globally using ASME's Codes and Standards.

Previous seminars have been held in Milan, Italy; New Orleans; and Seoul, South Korea. Most recently, a seminar took place last month in San Francisco.

On Oct. 30-31, representatives from ASME joined with CACI (the China Cooperation Network of ASME Code Items) to conduct a seminar on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

During the Beijing workshops, June Ling and Mark Sheehan of ASME's staff made presentations on the status of the global pressure equipment market, especially recent developments in Europe.

Robert Schueler and David Berger, both volunteers from the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee, made presentations on the latest developments in the ASME Boiler Code and their affect on how the Code is used by manufacturers.

Members of CACI made presentations about the latest advancements in the manufacture of steel in China, as well as developments in boiler and pressure vessel design and fabrication. There was an extensive question and answer period in which it became clear that the CACI members are devoted to learning as much as possible about how to use the ASME Code.

This seminar is one of a series conducted by ASME on the subject of "Doing Business Globally Using the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code."

Several members of ASME's Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards participated in the nuclear standards workshop that took place in Beijing in October. That workshop and two others were part of an ongoing effort by ASME to enable companies to do business globally.

As with previous seminars, the main focus will be on developments in Europe with the emergence of the European Commission's Pressure Equipment Directive. There will also be presentations on the status of pressure equipment trade and regulations in Asia, with one of the presenters from China having also made a presentation at the CACI seminar.

Information on the February seminar can be obtained by visiting the ASME Web site and clicking on the "Codes and Standards" tab.

Other seminars are planned for later in the year in both the United States and in Europe.

Information on those seminars can be obtained at the same location on the ASME Web site as soon as it becomes available.
