Officer nomination procedure will facilitate member participation

The Nominating Committee will meet in New Orleans during the 2001 ASME Summer Annual Meeting (SAM) in June to select nominees for presentation to the corporate membership for election for terms starting at the 2002 SAM.

The Nominating Committee represents all sectors of ASME. Its members were recommended by the respective units of ASME and formally elected during the Business Meeting at the previous SAM.

The Nominating Committee reviews proposals that are received from members of the various ASME councils, boards and regions, or individual members. After interviewing the candidates and their supporters at the meeting, the Nominating Committee selects the nominees for inclusion on the proxy. The proxy is sent to all ASME corporate members for ratification in the fall.

The Nominating Committee is now seeking candidates for the offices of president (2002-2003), three members of the Board of Governors (2002-2005), and vice presidents (2002-2005) for Regions II, IV, VI and VIII, and for Energy Resources, Manufacturing, Materials and Structures, Minorities and Women, Nuclear Codes and Standards, Pressure Technology Codes and Standards, Professional Development, and Systems and Design.

Please note that nominations must be submitted to the Nominating Committee by April 15. However, in an effort to facilitate the process, the committee is asking that a letter of intent to run for office be submitted by March 15.

The preliminary schedule for proposed nominees and their supporters to appear before the Nominating Committee at SAM is as follows: Monday, June 4: morning, Regional vice presidents; afternoon, technical and other vice presidents. Tuesday, June 5: morning, technical and other vice presidents; afternoon, Board of Governors. Wednesday, June 6: morning, president.

The chair of the Nominating Committee Interview Scheduling Subcommittee will contact the proposed nominees and their supporters with specific times for interviews.

An individual may appear before the Nominating Committee in support of one proposed nominee for any one office (for example, one for president, one for BOG, one for each vice president), except that no individual shall appear before the Committee as a supporter of proposed nominees for more than three offices.

Additionally, an individual shall not provide letters of support for more than one proposed nominee for any one office, or provide a letter of support for a proposed nominee for an office for which the individual is appearing before the Nominating Committee in support of another proposed nominee.

Nominating committee members, alternates, advisers and consultants cannot support nominations by letter or in person.

ASME members also have the option of organizing a special nominating committee to propose additional nominees. If they want to do so, at least one percent of the corporate members must notify the executive director of this intention. If such a committee is formed, the names it proposes will also appear on the proxy. The names of any nominees selected by a special nominating committee must be submitted by Aug. 3 to the executive director's office.
