Schools awarded ASME money

Five departments of mechanical engineering received $6,000 each to be distributed to incoming freshmen in the fall 2001 term under the Lucy and Charles W.E. Clarke Scholarship program.

The winning schools are: Purdue University, Rowan University, Virginia Tech, the University of Dayton and the University of Wisconsin (Madison).

A committee representing the ASME Auxiliary, ASME Foundation and the ASME Council on Education, which have joint responsibility for the scholarship program, judged the recipients. Applications are based on the contributions that ASME Student Sections make to improve their respective academic departments.

The department heads at the winning schools have discretion over the selection of the freshmen, along with the amounts and number of awards they choose to give.

This is the first year that the Clarke Scholarships have been awarded. Lucille Clarke, the daughter of Lucy and Charles Clarke, left $650,000 to the ASME Foundation and ASME Auxiliary to honor her parents. The earnings from the bequest are used to fund the scholarships.
