ASME initiative to focus on industry

In response to a Board of Governors' strategic direction to improve ASME's relevance to industry, an initiative is being developed to expand the Society's focus on industry through a portfolio of products and services to enhance corporate competitiveness.

This initiative has several key objectives: expanding ASME's reach into new and emerging fields of science and global markets; providing a focal point to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship for meeting the market-based needs of corporations and other institutional customers; integrating and packaging of ASME products and services for corporations and other institutional customers; creating a technology-based economic development "clearinghouse" to bridge common areas among academia, government and industry; and developing services and events that increase the interaction among engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

Based on extensive research, six clusters were selected for initial focus: water management technology, national and Homeland Security, computer hardware and software, biotechnology and pharmaceutical, pressure equipment, and energy.

The initiative will integrate existing and future products and services designed specifically for these industries. For details, e-mail Reese Meisinger, managing director, External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, at meisingerr@asme.org.
