BP helps with cost of EWB's trip

The Engineers Without Borders team at the University of New Hampshire will embark on the third and final phase of its potable-water project in Thailand next month with the help of BP.

To facilitate the transportation costs of ASME member Ben Nichols ["EWB experience leaves lasting impression," page 1, last month] and several other EWB team members, BP has made a contribution of $7,500.

"BP is pleased to work with Engineers Without Borders and the student chapter at the University of New Hampshire, supporting their efforts in Thailand as part of our sponsorship of Engineers Week 2005," said Meredith Short, an ASME member who is the Engineers Week project manager for BP.

BP, a global energy company, has taken an active, hands-on role as corporate co-chair of Engineers Week 2005, including assigning Short the full-time position of project managing BP's corporate co-chair responsibilities. As the lead society for EWeek 2005, ASME is spearheading the Engineers Without Borders efforts as its legacy project, to be continued by future EWeek celebrations beyond 2005.

According to Short, ASME's support of Engineers Without Borders directly aligns with BP's own corporate values. "Their [EWB's] work on sustainable projects aligns with our corporate goals for sustainability and investment in education," she stated. "This is another excellent example of the contribution engineers make to society and our developing world."
