Proposed ASME changes detailed; member
attendance urged

In the coming months, ASME has scheduled four
General Assembly meetings to explain in detail the proposals from the
Continuity and Change initiative that were presented last month in Washington,
D.C., to the Board of Governors and those attending ASME's 2003
Congress.
In writing about the proposals in his "From the President"
column last month in ASME NEWS, Reggie Vachon described the meetings
as "an open forum to discuss the key points of the plan and to
explore issues to reach a consensus."
Gathering feedback on the proposals in structured sessions is a key
reason for holding the assemblies, Vachon said in the column. "We
will explain our vision and how the preliminary plan will implement
it. We will review the various processes that were used to develop the
preliminary plan. Because we anticipate a large number of participants,
the General Assembly will be facilitated to allow comments from as many
of our members as possible. It will be an open forum to discuss the
key points of the plan and to explore issues to reach a consensus."
The General Assemblies will be held in January and February at sites
with high member density: Jan. 10 in Toledo, Ohio; Jan. 24 in the area
of Hartford, Conn.; Feb. 7 in Houston, Texas; and Feb. 21 in the area
of Oakland, Calif.
To underscore the importance of attending, invitations will be sent
to members who live within a 200-mile radius of each event. All are
asked to R.S.V.P. to ensure that seating and communication are arranged
appropriately.
Those unable to attend can visit www.asme.org/change
to get updates. Feedback can be
e-mailed to Vachon directly at president@asme.org.
