Each year, the ASME Foundation and the ASME Auxiliary
jointly award scholarships to mechanical engineering departments that
have an ASME student section. These scholarships are awarded to incoming
freshmen who are interested in becoming mechanical engineers.
The program was created to support students who are studying to become
mechanical engineers while paying tribute to ASME student sections with
outstanding records.
The scholarship was the result of a bequest by a long-time Auxiliary
member, Lucille Clarke, in memory of her parents. Her father was a long-time
ASME member, and her mother was a member of the Auxiliary.
Among the Clarke scholars is Justin McGivern of the University of Wisconsin,
who said he became interested in a career in engineering when he was
16. "I began using the insulin pump an incredible piece
of technology a new insulin delivery system that improved my
daily routine by eliminating the multiple injections. This remarkable
device is very intricate, extremely fine tuned, and works so well that
it inspired me to pursue a degree in mechanical design with the intent
of developing devices to better the lives of others. I will always be
thankful to the people who researched, invented and developed this machine.
This and my love of math and science have made me a prime candidate
for a profession as a mechanical engineer."
The following schools and students are recipients: William Seppelt,
John Sowden and John Westenberger, who are attending New Jersey Institute
of Technology, Newark, N.J.; Brian Adams, Eric Dunn, Hooman Noori and
Adriadn Ortega, who are attending North Carolina State University, Raleigh,
N.C.; Andrew Byrd, Mary Rose Hein and Randy Stabnow, who are attending
St. Martin's College, Lacey, Wash.; Rachael Click, Bryan Coley and James
Sims, who are attending the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.;
David Hoffert, Amy Marconnet and Justin McGivern, who are enrolled at
the University of Wisconsin; and Gerald Bowen, Melissa Anne Farkas,
Nyssa Glenn and Eric Schaeffer, who are students at
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.
