Manual on protecting idled equipment becomes available from ASME Press

An updated manual that explains how to treat idled equipment to protect it from corrosion, thus reducing maintenance or replacement costs, is now available through ASME Press.

The manual, "Consensus for the Lay-up of Boilers, Turbines, Turbine Condensers and Auxiliary Equipment," is for use by industries that frequently need to idle equipment.

"Failure to properly protect equipment has frequently resulted in very high maintenance costs and, in some instances, the need to replace badly corroded equipment," David E. Simon II, past chair of the ASME Research and Technology Committee on Water and Steam in Thermal Systems, wrote in the updated manual's preface.

Several task forces of the committee performed the data compilation to prepare the consensus, the first update in seven years. Task group members represented a cross-section of manufacturers, operators and consultants involved in the fabrication and operation of industrial utility boilers, turbines and turbine condensers.

The manual (Order No. I00567) is available through ASME Press at $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers. To order, call (800) 843-2763 or (973) 882-1167, or fax (973) 882-1717.
