Suggested course of action by IAB
Following two days of discussion, the IAB gave
ASME four steps to take to aid risk assessment.
Recommendation 1: ASME should continue to advocate the use of
risk analysis/assessment in public policy decision-making in homeland
security. Activities to consider include the development of common terminology,
methodology, metrics and performance test codes for risk.
Recommendation 2: Vulnerability analysis may emerge as an area
of engineering specialty, and ASME should explore education opportunities
and the development of vulnerability assessment tools, such as quantitative
methods, guidelines and/or standards.
Recommendation 3: ASME should examine the Society's existing
standards to ensure reliability in depth, while retaining efficiency.
Risk and risk mitigation should be incorporated into standards where
appropriate. New standards should be explored in areas such as threat
mitigation, modeling and simulation, and chemical, biological, radiation
detection and sensors.
Recommendation 4: ASME should consider developing guidelines
and educational programs on emergency planning, rapid recovery and threat
mitigation for various types of facilities in the private sector.
