Environmental scanning, or the acquisition and use of information about
events, trends and relationships in an organization's external environment,
is an important component of ASME's Continuity and Change Initiative.
ASME partners with AIChE, NIA
ASME last month signed two separate memorandums of understanding
with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and with
the National Insulation Association (NIA) thus establishing formal
relationships with the two other organizations.
ASME Brussels office opens
In June, ASME opened its Brussels office. With this new office, the
Society intends to broaden its global outreach to engineers in Europe
and surrounding markets.
New energy award honors celebrated
ASME member
The ASME Committee on Honors has approved the establishment of the Frank
Kreith Energy Award, which was proposed by ASME's Solar Energy and Advanced
Energy divisions, with support of the Energy Resources Group.
Two members are among 'best
paper' winners at OTC
ASME members Robert McInnes and Dave Wieczorek, along with Scott Arnold
and Bob Brooks, received the institute's award for their technical paper,
"Thunder Horse Ballistic Mitigation," during the OTC Industry
Luncheon.

The linotype machine of 1890, which increased the speed of newspaper
composition by 500 percent and spurred the growth of publishing in the
late 19th century, last month was deemed an ASME Historical Engineering
Landmark.
Coal-fired power plants play
key role in U.S. energy portfolio
"The Need for Additional US Coal-Fired Power Plants" recommends
that national policy development and Congressional incentives be directed
toward increasing the use of modern coal-fired power plants to increase
energy efficiency, reduce pollutant emissions, and provide economic
protection from energy price fluctuations.
