Two members are among 'best paper' winners at OTC

HOUSTON — Two ASME members were among the four authors honored with the Lubinski Best Paper Award at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) here in June. ASME's International Petroleum Institute sponsored the competition.

ASME members Robert McInnes and Dave Wieczorek, along with Scott Arnold and Bob Brooks, received the institute's award for their technical paper, "Thunder Horse Ballistic Mitigation," during the OTC Industry Luncheon.

The paper addressed the Thunder Horse deepwater development project's high-pressure/high-temperature environment and the need to evaluate the ballistic potential of objects flying off equipment during a sudden catastrophic failure. Brooks, McInnes and Wieczorek are employed by FMC Technologies Inc. Arnold works for Proforma PSI LLC.

The winning paper was selected from the pool of technical presentations that were given throughout the conference. The award was created to encourage high standards among the papers presented at the conference. It is named after Arthur Lubinski, originator of the ASME Study Committee for the Exchange of Offshore Information that ultimately led to the formation of the OTC.

ASME's Houston-based International Petroleum Technology Institute, formed in 2003, provides advanced educational, networking and technology transfer opportunities for the offshore engineering and related industries. The institute is composed of three separate divisions: the Petroleum Division; the Offshore, Ocean and Arctic Engineering Division; and the Pipeline Systems Division.
