At the ASME Auxiliary's annual meeting
in June, a new grade of membership was added to the Auxiliary's constitution.
This new grade of membership is for those who have no familial relationship
to an ASME member but support the objectives of the ASME Auxiliary.
This new membership grade will be called an Associate Membership.
During the June meeting, $26,000 in scholarships was awarded. Ten undergraduate
scholarships were awarded, one master's degree scholarship, one doctoral
scholarship and one to a non-U.S. student entering a graduate program
in mechanical engineering at a U.S. university.
Along with these scholarships, an additional $18,000 was awarded this
year from the Auxiliary's share of the Lucy and Charles W.E. Clarke
Scholarship Fund to six departments of mechanical engineering. These
six departments then select the recipients of those scholarships from
their incoming freshman. Finally, the Auxiliary's share of the FIRST
Scholarships, to be awarded jointly with the ASME Foundation, amounted
to another $17,500.
The total amount awarded by the Auxiliary towards scholarships for the
academic year 2004-05 is $61,500.
ASME Auxiliary members who would like to serve on the National Board
should contact Myrna Zamrik, the new president of the Auxiliary, at
lizdoodle@aol.com,
or call her at (814) 238-2188 during the summer, or (480) 985-8949 during
the winter. We need many more people to help us provide scholarships
and loans to mechanical engineering students.
