ASME offers Professional Practice Curriculum online

ASME is now making available the Professional Practice Curriculum, a free online program of study for engineering students and early-career engineers that will supplement the formal college or university engineering curriculum.

The curriculum can be used with in-company training programs, as well as in academic or ASME section settings.

The site — http://www.professionalpractice.asme.org — features 10 modules: a three-module Product Life Cycle Series; Project Management; two modules on Leadership; Introduction to an Engineering Career; Effective Technical Presentations; Intellectual Property: Patents; and Engineering Public Policy: Policy Gear.

The project and Web site were introduced during ASME's Summer Annual Meeting in June, where both received positive reviews.

"The PPC is the best reason that I've seen for an engineer to join ASME International," according to one reviewer of the online Professional Practice Curriculum modules.

Beta testing that is now underway with two ASME student sections is bringing constructive feedback to the early modules, and feedback is being sought from a broad range of users.

A key focus of the PPC Task Force, which reports to the Board on Professional Development, is how the Professional Practice Curriculum can be used within, or outside of, existing engineering course structures.

The Task Force has established a PPC Faculty Advisory Board to review modules, solicit new module content, participate in beta testing and develop guidelines for the implementation of modules within engineering courses. The advisory board is seeking additional members.

If you would like to serve or recommend a colleague to serve on the PPC Faculty Advisory Board, or have module content that you would like to contribute, contact Marian Heller at hellerme@asme.org.

Contributor guidelines are available at http://www.professionalpractice.asme.org. A new brochure about the curriculum is also available, and will be posted to the Web site soon.
